Situating Higher-Order, Critical, and Critical-Analytic Thinking in Problem- and Project-Based Learning Environments: A Systematic Review

Abstract Critical thinking (CT) is widely regarded as an important competence to obtain in education. Students’ exposure problems and collaboration have been proven helpful promoting CT processes. These elements are present student-centered instructional environments such problem-based project-based learning (P(j)BL). Next CT, also higher-order (HOT) critical-analytic (CAT) contain that fostered by P(j)BL. However, HOT, CAT definitions often ill-defined overlap. The systematic review, therefore, investigated how were conceptualized P(j)BL environments. Another aim of this study was review the evidence on effectiveness fostering or CAT. Results demonstrated absence research a stronger focus processes than dispositions (i.e., trait-like tendency willingness engage CT). Further, while we found positive effects HOT there lack clarity consistency researchers measured these forms thinking. Also, essential components overlooked. Finally, identified various design issues effect studies, control groups, bring reported outcomes those investigations into question.
